Setup guide

Connect your camera & auto scorer

You only need your darts and a phone to play. If you want online matches with live video, or you run your own dart-detection bridge, this guide walks you through it step by step.

Camera for online matches

Use the phone, tablet or webcam you already own. Video is peer-to-peer between you and your opponent and stays optional.

  1. 1

    Start from an online match

Camera video is only used for online matches. Head to Play → Online, pick a game, and sit in a room as host or guest. The camera button appears once the match starts.

  2. 2

    Allow camera and microphone access

When your browser asks, tap Allow. If you miss it, open your browser's site permissions for Moody's and turn camera and mic back on. The match can continue audio-only or scores-only if you prefer.

  3. 3

Position your device beside the oche

Prop your phone or tablet in landscape mode about arm's length from the throw line so your opponent can see the board and your throw. A cheap phone stand or a stack of books works fine.

  4. 4

Pick the right camera and quality

Use the rear camera for the sharpest picture. If your connection is wobbly, drop the quality to Balanced or Data Saver. You can mute your mic, flip cameras, or stop video at any time without leaving the match.

Auto scorer / camera board

Advanced and entirely optional. If your own detection setup can send throws over a WebSocket, the app will score them like a human tap.

  1. 1

Build or use a WebSocket scoring bridge

The app does not include its own camera-detection hardware. If you have a setup that can detect darts and send them over a WebSocket, Moody's can score them automatically. Tap-to-score always stays available as a backup.

  2. 2

Sign in and open Board settings

Go to Settings → Board settings (or visit /devices from the footer). You need to be signed in so the bridge address is saved to your profile securely.

  3. 3

Enter the board address and credentials

Paste the WebSocket URL, for example ws://192.168.1.50:8080. Add a board serial or access token only if your own bridge expects them. Turn on Connect automatically if you want hands-free scoring every game.

  4. 4

    Test the connection

Tap Test connection on the Board settings page and throw a dart. You should see the detected segment appear in the Detected darts list. If nothing shows up, check that your phone and bridge are on the same Wi-Fi and that the address is correct.

  5. 5

Start a game and watch the AutoScore bar

Open any game mode. The strip above the keypad shows whether the bridge is live, paused, or reconnecting. A detected dart scores exactly like a tapped dart, including doubles, trebles, bull and miss.

Messages your bridge can send

The bridge can send plain text or JSON. Anything that looks like a throw is turned into a dart. Misses can be sent as miss, out, 0 or S0.

  • T20
  • D16
  • S25
  • { "event": "THROW_DETECTED", "sector": "T20" }
  • { "multiplier": 2, "value": 16 }

Troubleshooting

The exact fixes for the failures we see most. Signed in, the camera setup wizard, live camera test and auto-scorer health screen will tell you which one you have hit.

  • Keep your phone and the bridge on the same local network. Local bridge addresses start with ws://, hosted ones with wss://.
  • If the bridge drops out, tap-to-score still works — you never lose a leg because of a connection hiccup.
Browser never asks for camera permission
The prompt only appears on a secure connection. Use the https:// site (or the installed app), not an http:// address. If you dismissed the prompt once, open the padlock in the address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload and run the setup wizard again.
"Camera access was blocked"
Permission is denied for the site. Chrome: padlock → Site settings → Camera → Allow. Safari on iPhone: Settings → Safari → Camera → Ask. Android app: Settings → Apps → Moody's → Permissions → Camera. Then reload.
"Another app is using the camera"
Only one app can hold the camera. Close video calls, the stock camera app and any other browser tab with a preview open, then tap Retest on the live camera test.
Picture is grainy or keeps freezing
Drop the resolution a notch in the wizard (Sharp → Balanced → Data saver), move closer to the router or switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and plug the phone in — battery saver throttles the camera.
Board doesn't fit the framing ring
Mount the camera square-on, level with the bullseye and about a metre out. Landscape gives the widest shot. If the board still overflows, step the camera back rather than zooming.
Detections land on the wrong number
Nearly always alignment or glare. Re-run the live camera test: bullseye on the centre dot, whole doubles ring inside the ring, even light with no bright spot. Wipe the lens too.
Bridge status stays on Connecting
The address is reachable but not answering as a WebSocket. Check the port, use ws:// for a local bridge and wss:// for a hosted one, and confirm the bridge software is actually running.
"Board connection dropped"
Phone and bridge must be on the same Wi-Fi network — guest networks and VPNs block local addresses. A fixed IP or hostname for the bridge machine stops the address changing overnight.
Connected, but no darts ever arrive
The bridge is connected yet publishing nothing the app recognises. Check the health screen's event log, then make sure your bridge sends throws as plain text (T20, D16, DB, miss) or JSON with sector, or multiplier plus value.
Bridge needs a serial or token
Add them in Board settings. They are appended as board and token query parameters, since browsers can't set WebSocket headers. A 401 or instant close usually means a wrong or expired token.
Every dart scores twice
Two things are feeding the game — usually a duplicate browser tab connected to the same bridge, or the bridge sending both a THROW and a THROW_DETECTED event. Close spare tabs and send one event per dart.
Scores lag behind the throw
Check the last-dart timestamp on the health screen. A delay of more than a second or two points at a busy bridge machine or crowded Wi-Fi, not the app.

Common questions

Do I need a camera or auto scorer to play?

No. Deadly Doubles and all other games work with tap-to-score on any standard bristle board. Camera and auto-scoring are optional extras for online matches and hands-free scoring.

Which auto-scoring boards are officially supported?

We don't endorse or guarantee any particular vendor. The bridge accepts any WebSocket that sends throws as plain text like T20, D16, S25, DB, bull or miss, or as JSON with sector / multiplier + value fields.

Can I use auto scoring in online matches?

Yes. Detected darts are validated server-side the same as tapped darts, so they work in local games, training, and online matches with live video.

Why does my camera keep reconnecting?

Usually weak Wi-Fi, the phone locking, or another app grabbing the camera. Make sure the device stays awake, has a strong signal, and no other video app is running.
